Term 4 week 6 2021
Principal's Report
Student Leadership Roles
This week our year 5 students have been preparing for their nominations for 2022 Student Leadership positions. Leadership is a quality that all students at Coolum Primary School are encouraged and supported to develop. Students from Prep to Year 6 take on the role of leaders of their own learning. Through the curriculum and extra curricula activities, all students are encouraged to develop the skills necessary to be a leader. This ensures that students perceive themselves as leaders and have the opportunity and confidence to take on leadership roles within and external to the classroom as the move through the school.
Student leadership roles challenge individuals to develop a sense of vision and purpose as they take on responsibilities and use decision making skills in order to carry a project through to a successful conclusion. They develop interpersonal and intrapersonal skills including communication, negotiation, team work and reflection. Students are given opportunities to develop the skills of active, reflective listeners who respond effectively as they work with others to determine and achieve collective goals.
Embedded in our extra-curricular program are formalised student leadership roles. Through their actions Coolum Primary School’s Student Leaders reflect and demonstrate the School’s Values: Community, Strength and Success.
Students’ attendance, involvement in school activities, diligence in class and adherence to the code of conduct for students will be considered for leadership positions.
The primary leadership roles are School Captains, Music Leaders, Sport Leaders, Environmental Leaders and Student Council Representatives (SCR). School Captains will be announced during school parade on 26/11/21 and House Leaders on 3/12/21.
News from PRR
It has been a busy term in Prep R. In English we have been writing letters and corresponding with a number of people including Mrs Proctor, Wilma the weather wombat and Sam. Poor Sam lost his dog, Pat. Our preppies worked very hard to help Sam find his dog.
A visit from the life savers kicked off our learning about beach safety. We went on an excursion to the beach and then the Westpac helicopter came to school!
Mr Grummitt has been keeping us busy in the STEM room teaching us how to write our own algorithms for the Bee bots. “Algorithms are step by step instructions”.
We have enjoyed learning about the weather in science and decided to do a dance about the 4 seasons using green screen technology. It has been fun dressing up in different weather gear and recording each other in front of the green screen. We are going to show our project to everyone on parade this Friday and perform our dance.
Preparations for year one have begun. The students are excited about their visit to a year one classroom this Thursday. What will it be like to have our own desk, new teacher and a new classroom? Be sure to check out our awesome foyer display about the weather and some pictures from our fun filled beach excursion.
That’s all folks, signing off from Miss Storm and the fabulous Prep R team.
Day for Daniel
A big thank you to all the Coolum students who supported Day for Daniel on Friday 29 October. Coolum students raised $578 for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation.
Beach Safety
As part of our beach safety program the junior school was treated to a visit by the Westpac surf rescue helicopter.
Surfing Championship
Surfing Superstars of the Future!!
Last Friday, Coolum State School held its annual Surfing Championship with 45 surfers competing for the prestigious title of Coolum Surfing Champion. The waves were great , with lots of ripping and slashing with the competitors doing an array of reo’s, cutbacks and even some lobster diving!! The four different divisions were all hotly contested with the judges having a hard time deciding the eventual winners which were : Juniors Girls –Annika Radcliffe; Junior Boys-Sunny Canina; Senior girls – Livy Corvisy and Senior Boys-Ryder Martin. Both Ryder and Livy leave primary school with record wins for this event with Ryder taking out an incredible 4 titles including his first one in year one. Livy has won 3 titles in a row which is the record for girls. Our Barra Surf Star award goes to Ky Clements for his great sportsmanship and frothing attitude. Go Ky!! We would like to thank all the parents for their support, Coolum Boardriders and in particular Chris Barraclough, Shereef Cooper, Matthew and Racheal Little, Matt Martin and Glen Finlay and for all their efforts in running such a great event!! Science Spectacular with Dr. Rob
Last Thursday, as part of our school focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), well-renowned scientist and TV presenter Dr. Rob (https://www.doctorrob.com.au), conducted an exciting range of experiments tailored to each year level.
Throughout the day, students were amazed by gravity defying water, stuck books, disappearing cups, an amplified slinky, a singing chimney, balloons that didn’t pop, paper that wouldn’t burn, steel that did burn, magnets attracting and repelling, cans imploding, dry ice rockets firing, something called elephant’s toothpaste and of course, fireballs!
Thanks to Dr. Rob for such a fantastic day of science!
‘What’s on the menu?’
This semester, Year 3 students have been learning about traditional and modern food and fibre production technologies and investigating the advantages of modern food preparation and preservation methods. On Monday we had our food preparation day in the Activities Hall which saw students working in pairs using some of these traditional and modern food preparation methods to make a healthy snack of their own design.
We had over $400 of fresh Australian grown produce to use to make our dishes come to life. Some of the amazing creations were grape snakes and fruit skewers, fruit infused yoghurts, salami, tomato and cheese savoury crackers and some bunny faces made from rice cakes, carrot sticks and capsicum. I was amazed by the wide range of savoury treats and fruit dishes that were created.
Thank you to all the staff who assisted to make this event possible and a special thanks to Lisa Marsh and her Year 5 & 6 student helpers Ky (5S), Ollie (5M), Toby (5D), Hunter (6A), Clayton (6P), we couldn’t have done it without you!
Congratulations to all students on a wonderful day!
Sport
School Rugby League Update
Last Friday 29 October Coolum State School’s Year 3 and Year 4 Rugby League teams travelled to Pirate Park, Tewantin, to participate in the Moses Mbye Rugby League Gala Day.
Three mixed teams were selected in each year level and each team played three or four twenty minute modified games against other schools in the district.
The Coolum teams were made up of two or three club players and the rest being new to the game of Rugby League. It was great to see all players work together and give each other the opportunity to run with the ball, tackle and pass the ball when possible. Some of the Year 3 players were even happy to play for other schools because they were short on numbers.
Mr Welch, Mr Porter and Mr Dwyer selected one player from each team who continually showed team spirit, determination and a willingness to learn more about Rugby League. These players were Salassi, Tiernan, Izaak, Ryder, Sonny and Zac. Well done, boys!
All participants were given a surprise during the day when Moses Mbye visited Pirate Park to see all the teams in action. In fact, Moses spent most of his time signing autographs on football boots!
A special thank you to Mr Welch and Mr Porter for giving up their lunch breaks and coaching the teams, and to the parents who supported our players and kept us motivated all day!

School Watch
The School Watch program encourages everyone to look out for and report any after-hours crime in our schools.
Empty schools can become targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage, especially during school holiday periods. This comes at a cost to the whole community and not just the financial cost of repairs.
The School Watch program is a partnership between the Department of Education and Protective Services Group, Queensland Police Service, providing a way for members of the community to report anything they see that is suspicious, even if it seems minor.
On average, more than 700 calls are made to School Watch every year, helping to keep our schools safe.
Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88.
If you see a crime in progress, call Triple Zero (000).
