Term 2 Week 8
Principal's Report

Dear Coolum Community,
Wow! How amazing was our Under 8’s day! It was so wonderful to see so many family members come to school and celebrate the learning of our littlest students in the school! Thank you to our staff for their hard work setting up all of the activities and events. It was all hands on decks and it was pretty clear form all of the smiles that all students had the best time!
This week a small group of parents and P&C members met with me to discuss a review of our School Uniform Policy. It was a very productive conversation and great to hear the viewpoints of our parents. There were not huge changes to the policy, rather more clarity provided to parents around the expectations with our uniform. I am going to collate the information and update the draft policy, ready for our wider community to provide feedback. Our P&C will be sending out the information through their mailing list in the next week. If you are not already on the P&C mailing list and would like to receive information about the events and activities happening in our school and also provide feedback on the draft Uniform Policy update, please register using the QR code below.
Have a wonderful fortnight and stay warm!
Shannyn

5K News
This term students have been learning about adaptations in science and elements of art in art lessons. As a final piece of art, the students made a diorama of either a rainforest or desert for an animal. Students then put these on display for their peers to have a look at. On Tuesday each class spent some time in each others’ class looking at the amazing effort that all students put in. Thanks year 5 students on a job well done!

Prep G news
We have had a really interesting time in Term 2. So much learning and lots of fun things too. We have had a lovely Mother’s Afternoon, played games and completed craft projects with our Yr buddies, learnt about pets and had a visit from some animals with ‘Wander with the Wildlings’ team and much more.
We got to pat the blue tongue lizard.
We also got to pat two turtles and a snake.
One of the best days of Prep is when we get to enjoy all the activities for Under Eight’s Day.

STEM NEWS
STEM NEWS
During the first half of this year there has been a very keen group of Year 4 & 5 students working on a Minecraft Education Competition during their lunch breaks. The competition was designed to promote creativity, problem-solving and teamwork skills while providing and entertaining and educational activity. This dedicated group of students explored and interpreted a story from the Dreamtime where they were tasked with creating an authentic representation of the chosen story’s characters, setting and significance. Each team presented their learning process in a PowerPoint a clear understanding of their story’s themes and importance and demonstrating cultural respect. These projects have been submitted and we are all waiting anxiously for the results. Good luck Minecraft Competition students.

Premiers Reading Challenge
2025 Premier’s Reading Challenge
We are nearly halfway through the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2025. I hope your children are enjoying the challenge to read as many books as possible in the three-month period.
The PRC is a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. The students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, from 6 May to 22 August. Students can collect a copy of the reader record form to tally books read throughout the challenge from their classroom teacher or from the PRC website. You are welcome to return more than one record sheet. We encourage them to see how many books they can read in the challenge period. The more books read, the greater our school total can be.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2025 challenge is to encourage students to make time to read. Last year saw more than 216,000 children from around the state participate.
Key dates | Activity |
6 May – 22 August | Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students |
25 August | Student reader record forms submitted to teacher |
3 – 14 November | Premier's Reading Challenge Celebration Weeks |
Every student who completes the challenge, and returns the completed record reader form, will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
To make it extra fun, we have some special Coolum State School prizes. There will be a prize for:
- the class that reads the most books
- the top individual reader from each year level
- the top reader of the whole school.
As a treat this year, all students can earn five spirit points for their house team with every sheet that is completed, signed by a parent, and handed in.
If your child wishes to participate in the PRC, please return the completed record reader form to your class teacher by 25 August 2025.
