Principal's Report
Thank you for a wonderful term 3.
There has been so much accomplished this term both within and out of the classroom. This week teachers were involved in moderateing students work samples for assessment. I was lucky enough to see first hand the high quality of work that students produced during the term. The staff and students should feel very proud of the work and levels attained. We have also had success on the sporting field in Soccer, Surfing, Netball, Rugby League and Cheer. Unfortuately not all of our wonderful eisteddfod performances got to take the stage, but they dazzled us during parade. Our music program had students attending workshops and performing and today our Rock Bands are on tour. We've had bike and environmental incursions, Heritage and Gold Rush tours, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Performance excursion and who could forget Book Week parade, and that the air-conditioning started! What a busy term, there has been something for everyone, we all sure deserve a break!! But not before we celebrate that this term we all focused on filling everyones buckets and being good people with the festival of colour. We can't wait for Friday afternoon to colour everyones world! Stay safe and have a wonderful break. We can't wait to welcome you all back for term four on Tuesday 5 October, with us all focussed on bringing back "COOLUM CARNIVAL" on Friday 22 October.
This week we farewell Mrs Shayrn O'Brien our wonderful Business Manager who will be heading to the High School for the next 6 months. While Mrs O'Brien is away we will welcome Mrs Rebecca Hann to Coolum State School as our new Business Manager.
Australia's Biggest Child Safety Lesson
Last week was National Child Protection Week. Students at Coolum all viewed a live safety lesson on Tuesday 7 September. Two different lessons were viewed, early years (P-2) and junior for all other year levels. These lessons taught children critical personal safety strategies, particularly around reporting to a Safety Helper. These videos are available on the Daniel Morcombe website.

News from PRT
Prep T have been learning about rhyming words this term. We can identify rhyming words and create more words that rhyme. We had a go at writing some rhymes of our own, all by ourselves!
News from PRH
On Monday 6 September the Preps celebrated Fathers' Day by bringing in their Father, Grandad or Poppy to engage in some fun activities.
The dads were welcomed into the classroom with a very colourful tie especially made for them. The children then took them on an adventure of making some very fast and super paper planes, which were tested outside. Some painted a picture of their dad, played with puzzles, made crowns to fit and created some great structures out of boxes. One pair made a satellite so that the mobile phone would work better at home!
When the dads got thirsty and hungry they were served a ginger beer punch paired with a cupcake and pretzels. These were much needed as some dads were seen to be concentrating very hard on cutting, folding, painting, colouring in and flying planes.
The students then serenaded their dads with a song to finish the night off. The most popular activity of the night was making paper planes!
Thank you to all that came along and had fun! (Wendy Gaines )
Interschool Teams Chess Tournament
Congratulations to our Coolum Knights and Bishops who attended Buddina State School on Tuesday to participate in the Interschools Teams Tournament for the first time. There were wins and losses with Harry, Fletcher and Kai all receiving merit ribbons but most importantly there was plenty of learning and skill improvement.
If you are interested in Chess then come along to our club. Coolum’s Chess Club runs every Monday at second break, all welcome.
Saving Wildlife Homes Competition
We are very excited to announce a new volunteer led project, Saving Wild Homes, a children’s art and story competition. If you have a child under 13 or know of one who loves art and nature, they can help us send a powerful message to the State Government that we must save wild homes.
National parks are really important for us to develop a connection with and grow our love of nature. I am sure we all have vivid memories of time spent in nature as children, which continue to inspire us to stand up for it’s protection today.
If you are passionate about art or writing and wildlife and their environment then this competition might be something you would like to be involved in.
Entries need to be sent direct to the competition runners as the closing date is October 1 2021 click here for more information: Saving Wildlife Homes
ICAS Results
Congratulations to all those students who have already completed their Mathematics and English ICAS test. The results can now be found at https://www.icasassessments.com/results-portal/ using the online access code that was sent home with students.
If you have any difficulties accessing this information please call the office and ask to speak to Judith Moore.
Our last students will sit their tests in week two of term four – good luck.
Year 4 convict shoe video
Year 4 have been looking at materials and their properties in Science. They were challenged to design, make and test a pair of shoes for convicts in the harsh conditions of the Australian landscape. They tested their shoes with a 60m run, obstacle course and water course. Aren't they fashionable?

Instrumental Music
The end of term 3 was a very busy, but extremely exciting time for our music department! On the Wednesday of week 9, some very lucky Golden Ticket holders (from our Year 6 Music and Drama students) travelled to Brisbane to attend the performance of “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” live on stage! And then on the final Thursday of term, our Rock Band stars headed off on our annual Coolum Primary Rocks Tour! Check out the photos below, and the sensational reports from our music leaders.
CHARLIE and the CHOCOLATE FACTORY!
On Wednesday the 8th of September, 36 lucky year 6 music and drama students had an awesome day at Brisbane going to see Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. All the singing, dancing and costumes were spectacular, and it really finished with a bang with the huge confetti cannons going off at the end. A huge thank you to Mrs Nix, Mrs Guest and Mrs Mackay for organising such and amazing day and giving us all unforgettable memories. (Kaitlyn Mackay - Music Captain)
On Wednesday the 8th of September, some of Coolum State School’s music and drama students travelled down to QPAC, in Brisbane to watch an amazing musical ”Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. There were bits that would take your breath away, amazing comedians and some fudge-ilicious chocolate bars! Thank you to the fabulous teachers, Mrs Nix, Mrs Guest and Mrs Mackay who took their time to organise the amazing trip. Thank you! (Lucy Ffitch – Music Captain)
COOLUM PRIMARY ROCKS – ON TOUR!
¯On Thursday the 16th September, our Rock Bands and Vocal Rock Group – ‘Sugar and Spice’, ‘Majority Rulez’, and ‘Sonic Singers’, travelled to Palmview State Primary School, and Chevallum State School to perform. (Lucy Greenland – Rock Band Leader)
And if we thought term 3 was busy, term 4 is set to explode in a fabulously Creative Arts-y way!

Sport
School Rugby League Update
Last Tuesday 7 September Coolum State School’s U12 Rugby League Team travelled to Beerwah Sports Complex to compete in the final of the Sunshine Coast Mark West Cup.
Six schools from the Caboolture, Glasshouse, Noosa, Coastal, Nambour and Redcliffe Districts participated in this competition. The schools were divided into two pools with finals being played between the leaders of Pool 1 and Pool 2.
Unfortunately, Coolum were beaten by one try in the first two games and played against Pacific Paradise School for fifth or sixth position. Coolum were successful against Pacific Paradise with a score of 28 to 14.
The team played with courage and determination throughout the day and displayed great sportsmanship on and off the field. It was extremely difficult to name one player who deserved to be recognised above all others, as the whole team gave their best. Although, the coaches did praise Cohen for his defensive efforts throughout the day and Belle's amazing speed and footwork in attack.
A special thank you to the parents who assisted with transport and kept the players and coaches motivated all day!
SEQ Finals
Last Friday our Junior Boys Football team travelled to Maroochydore to compete in the South East Queensland Primary Schools Cup football finals. The competition pulls together the champion schools from each region in South East Queensland to determine the champion school for 2021. The boys won their two pool games 4-0 and 7-0 against Albany Hills SS (Brisbane North) and Highfields College (Darling Downs) respectively. These results placed the boys into the final against the winner of Pool B Yeronga SS (Brisbane South). After a tense and see-sawing game the boys found themselves tied at 2-2 at the end of regulation, the game would be decided in golden goal extra time. Unfortunately Yeronga seized an opportunity to score thus making it 3-2 and ending the game. I am incredibly proud of the performance of the team playing 3 games in unseasonably hot weather and the boys have made a pact to come back next year and try and go one better. Thanks to all parents, friends and family members who supported the team on their journey and to Mr Lidden for helping out with coaching.
