Term 1 Week 6
Principal's Report
SafeST Committee Update
Our SafeST committee has been active working alongside Sunshine Coast Council, Queensland Transport and Main Roads to discuss options for the Coolum Yandina Road and School Road intersection, and School Road upgrades. As a result of the announcement to the Coolum Yandina Road and School Road intersection upgrade to occur towards the end of this year, council has fast tracked works on School Road. The plans for School Road include a new drop off area which should fit 10 cars and additional car parks. I was provided plans for this project this week. Next week we have arranged a special SafeST meeting on Wednesday 6 March at 1:30pm to share the plans for the works on School Road the intersection of School Road and Coolum Yandina Road. These works will have an impact on student waiting areas and active transport on School Road. During the meeting we will discuss solutions to this and also share the current School Master plan including the designs for the new building that incorporates Administration 12 classrooms and new tuckshop. We invite all interested parents and community members to come along.

Year 3 News
The year 3 students have been busy in our English lessons this term and have embarked on an exciting journey into the realm of fantasy narratives. The students have been immersed in exploring the structure of these narratives and the language features essential for crafting fascinating tales. It's been wonderful to see their writing evolve and improve with each passing week as they implement the writing skills they are learning in class.
As part of our fantasy writing unit, we would like for the Year 3 students to come to school dressed as their favourite fantasy character on Tuesday 5 March. This fun-filled day will provide them with a unique opportunity to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of fantasy. We will have a range of activities planned to complement our fantasy dress up day, including a scavenger hunt around the school that will involve that student doing a variety of different learning activities that directly correlates with their learning for the term.
Year 6 Camp
Project Year 6 Camp: Interviews conducted by Olivia, Saraya, Scarlett, Dylan and Matilda, part of the all- new BTS journalism team. (What is BTS? Coolum State School’s new school magazine – stay tuned for more details in the future…)
The Year 6 cohort recently embarked on a four-day camp in a new location, up in the Gympie region, a long way from the traditional Tallebudgera Camp destination. Interview questions included details about the food, activities, accommodation, challenges and possible fun factor. Here are some of their responses:
Ivy: We went to Gympie Garapine. We had so much fun with lots of activities at camp. I ate ham sandwiches, spaghetti, honey soy chicken, pie, ice cream, brownies and chicken wraps. The activities were big swing, crate climbing, survival skills, team work challenges and archery. The cabins were wooden, cosy, and had squeaky beds. We saw lots of lizards and birds’ eggs. We played lots of different games.
Indiya: Some of the food was good. There were ten people in our cabin. We did crate climbing and the giant swing. I would go again.
Ella: I enjoyed grade six camp because I was always with my friends. I liked the activities such as the giant swing because it was fun gliding through the air. I didn’t like the harnesses and was challenged by nothing. I learnt leadership skills and now I miss being with my friends every second. The food was okay.
Luca: At the start camp was scary as I wasn’t good at sleepovers, but it was a scary kind of fun. The most exciting thing for me was the giant swing - I felt a little sick but except for that it was fun.
Coolum State School would like to give huge thanks to all of the teachers and staff that gave up their own time to support our students on camp. Enriching opportunities such as this would not be possible without it.
Japanese Word of the Week
Yabai ( ヤバイ ) = crazy (the good or the bad kind, depending on the context)
Yabai is modern Japanese slang often used by the younger generation. It can be a comment on something that is extremely good or it could also mean the situation is very bad.

STEM News
This term, students in Years 1,2 and 3 have been working towards their Technology focussed units in our STEM room.
Year 1 students have been working in the Design Technologies area where they were initially learning about materials and their properties in line with their science unit. Students have now transitioned into learning about the production of some of the materials that they are now familiar with. Our Food and Fibre unit will see Year 1 design solutions for problems on a farm to produce food.
Year 2 students have been engaging with moving objects. They have been using Lego to gain an understanding of forces and motion as they plan and conduct investigations about the cause and effect of push and pull forces.
Finally, our Year 3 students have been investigating Digital Systems like computers and other electronic devices to understand how they work and problems they solve. They are now learning about computational thinking and how they can use algorithms to represent a sequence of steps.
It has been fantastic to see the level of engagement in the classroom with students working toward these tasks.

RideScore Active Schools
Do you live close to school?
- Does your child have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like your child to get an active, healthy and fun start to the day?
- Would you like a system that tells you automatically when they have arrived or left school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
We are one of 11 Sunshine Coast schools that are enjoying RideScore Active Schools Program funded by councils Transport Levy.
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program will be open to students who are able to ride a bicycle or scooter to school.
Participating students receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bicycle or scooter. The school bicycle storage facility has a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact to inform them that the student has arrived at/or departed the school.
Each trip is recorded by the RideScore app, providing incentives when the students reach their milestones. Earn great prizes:
- 20 Trips – Mystery prize
- 70 Trips – Movie ticket
- 120 Trips – Bli Bli Aqua Park voucher
Activities will be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage riding and scooting, including fun events and bicycle skills classes for all year 4 students.
This program was developed in 2022 with a Federal grant funding from the Move it AUS program, with the support of Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) and Stockland.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the app (search ‘RideScore’), complete your registration details
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (posted within 1 week) that will include:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- A scorecard (your app will also keep a live score)
Step 3 – Start riding and scooting!
Visit the RideScore website for more information, great resources and safety tips.
