Term 4 Week 2
Principal's Report
Welcome back for term 4 which is jam packed with events for students to demonstrate their learning and for families and the community to come together and celebrate. In two weeks, we have one of the biggest events on the calendar, the Coolum Carnival! For those new to our school and community this is one of the biggest events in the area with rides, slides, games, food, pig racing and everyone’s favourite fireworks. The junior oval off Barns Lane is open for parking during the event. We look forward to welcoming you all along.
Comfort Zone
A ‘comfort zone’ is that limited set of behaviours that a person will engage without becoming anxious. Alternatively, it describes that set of behaviours that have become comfortable, without creating a sense of risk. A person's personality can often be described by their comfort zones. For example, highly successful people may routinely step outside their comfort zones to accomplish what they wish. These people are often extroverted, confident and very socially connected. A comfort zone is a type of mental conditioning that causes a person to create and operate mental boundaries that are often not real or realistic. To step outside a person's comfort zone, they must experiment with new and different behaviours, and then experience the new and different responses that then occur within their environment.
Fear of the unknown keeps people in their comfort zones. Every time we try something new, there will always be a degree of nervousness. We can all remember trying something very nerve racking, like going on a roller coaster for the first time. When you got off, you had conquered it and couldn’t wait to get back on! This is an example of stepping outside your comfort zone, experiencing something new, conquering it and guess what? It now becomes part of your new ‘stretched’ comfort zone. That is the beauty of comfort zones; as you try new things, they become part of your comfort zone. We ask our children to do this every day as they learn in a supported environment. That’s the moral of the story. Be a risk taker, overcome your fears, try new things and expand your comfort zone. It’s the best way that you can have fun, explore new opportunities and have an adventurous life!

Coolum Carnival update
Our night of nights, the Coolum Carnival is fast approaching – Friday 27 October 2023. Our teachers do an amazing job in taking on a stall for the night but they need your help. Notification should have gone out from your child’s class teacher about volunteering some time to help out at a stall. Some of our stalls can become very busy and many hands make light work so please, we need your help to support our teachers and if you can spare 30 minutes on the night to help out, we would greatly appreciate it.
Rides! Rides! Rides!
Armbands and individual ride tickets will be available to purchase at the Tuckshop, online and also at 5Ws classroom before (8am to 8:30am) and after school (2:40 to 3pm) each day starting Monday 16 October to Thursday 26 October. The pre-event price of armbands is $40, on the night they will be $45. Junior rides are $7 each and senior rides are $10 each, height restrictions apply so please check the website for further details. Armbands and ride tickets purchased prior to the carnival will be distributed to the students during school time on carnival day. Younger and older siblings who are not enrolled at our school will be able to pick up their pre-purchased armbands and/or tickets from 3:30pm on carnival day at the ride ticket booth on the oval.
Our lucky bottle barometer is slowly moving up. Thank you to the families and students who have already donated to our lucky bottle stall. It is one of our most popular stalls so please keep them coming in so we can fill our barometer and your class can have the chance to win a class party for bringing in the greatest number of lucky bottles. Please remember lollies need to be wrapped, hair ties and stationery are other great fillers as well.
Students who donate items, whether it be lucky bottles or second-hand stall items receive a raffle ticket to go into our weekly draw at parade. Winners receive vouchers to be used at the Carnival.
Next week, keep an eye out for your child to bring home a plate for the Cake Stall. We encourage you to put on your chef’s hat and bake some goodies to donate to the stall. These could include slices, cakes, cupcakes or biscuits.
The more our community can help out, the bigger success we will have with our Carnival.

News from 4B
Wow, what a year it has been! We feel so grateful for many things in 4B and always try to be positive, have lots of fun and be kind to each other. Here is a snapshot of all the fun we have had so far…….We enjoyed sports day where all our true colours came out! It was great having swimming lessons in Term 1 to cool us down on those hot summer days! We also had an amazing time doing the Rainbow Run at our school to end off a busy Term 3.
In Science we have learnt about natural materials, rocks and erosion, force and made our own playground and this term we are looking forward to learning about life cycles and endangered animals. We’ve made our own travel itineraries, written stories, welcomed new students into our classroom and had fun taking part in Bike Education. We had a fabulous time on Year 4 camp where we participated in many activities that were quite challenging and came home exhausted after 3 days of non-stop action! 4B loved dressing up as our favourite book character for Book Week.
We have made tangrams and painted beautiful pictures in Art and did some work in Excel during ICT lessons. During Japanese, we made origami and learnt more about Japan and its people. From singing new songs and playing new instruments in Music, to learning new games in PE, we have had a brilliant time! The most fun we have as a class is when we have Funday Friday reward day on the last Friday of every month. We play team games, make cubby houses, create shops and bring our own games in from home to play with our friends. Last term, we participated in the Bike On program and enjoyed a Science Spectacular presentation with Dr Rob for Science Week. We’ve had some great achievements in our talented class and their enthusiasm to participate and represent our school does not go unnoticed….various team sports, Choir and Eisteddfod, Spelling Bee, Premier’s Reading Challenge, World of Maths and Instrumental Music. As well as all of this, we kept on top of learning, but remembered to have fun along the way!
We enjoyed filling each others buckets by saying and doing kind things for one another and loved learning about France and Hawaii in English. This term, we look forward to learning more about narrative texts and information texts. Everyone in 4B cannot wait to perform their Parade item in a couple of weeks advertising our amazing Coolum Carnival! Wow, what a busy, fun year it’s been already!!! Well done 4B, keep up the great work!!

🤩🎶 Coolum Primary Rocks 🎶🤩
And our Rock Bands + Vocal Rock Singers certainly did rock it out when they embarked on our annual Coolum Primary Rocks Tour at the end of last term! Our talented musos visited North Arm and Cooroy State Schools where they performed 2 amazingly high energy shows in front of very appreciative and energetic crowds. Mrs Mackay would like to congratulate all the students for being exceptionally wonderful representatives for our school with their exemplary behaviour as well as their sensational musical talent. Japanese News
This year on Friday 3 November we will celebrate Japanese Culture Day at school.
Friday 3 November is Culture Day in Japan. Also known as 'Bunka no Hi', it is a national holiday to celebrate all aspects of Japanese culture, arts, freedom and peace.
On the day, students are invited to wear Japanese colours of red and white or dress in something related to Japan.
6N will present a Japanese culture themed performance at both Senior and Junior parade.
In the afternoon, we will welcome the Japanese Cultural Centre to school; they will teach students in years 4 to 6 a traditional cultural dance.
The tuckshop will be offering a Japanese themed menu, more details of this will be shared nearer the time.
We are really looking forward to this wonderful day of celebration.
Japanese Word of the Week
写真を撮ってもいいですか?(shashin o totte mo ii desu ka?) : May I take a photo?
This expression is used to ask for permission to take pictures. You can use it when asking if photography is allowed in a certain area, as well as to ask people if you can take a photo of or with them (such as when you want a photo of someone wearing a kimono).

RideScore Active Schools
REGISTER NOW!
- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
