Principal's Report
Last week we welcomed all our marvellous students back to Coolum to begin face to face learning together again. I would like to thank our wonderful staff for their resilience and flexibility as they have transitioned from face to face learning - to learning at home - back to face to face learning. It has been a mammoth job and one that I am very proud of our teachers for completing. I would also like to thank our parents for the amazing support during at home learning and following the Covid-19 restrictions to ensure we can get back to normal as quickly as possible. Thank you one and all!
Air-conditioning
Our first four classrooms are done. We have had four of our year 3 classrooms in different parts of the school and they are looking forward to getting back to their classrooms. Our next group of classrooms will be year 2. They will relocate this week. Everyone is looking forward to a cooler summer this year!
SafeST meeting
Last week we held this term's SafeSt committee meeting via phone. During the meeting we discussed possible changes to drop zones and parking on School Rd and Barns Lane. Sunshine Coast Council are following up with some of these ideas and will report back to us at the next meeting. The planning for Barns Lane that runs parallel to the senior oval is on hold while the developers of Barns Lane Farm negoiate with council and Transport and Main Roads. We commended Councillor Maria Suarez for her advocacy to get the footpath extended on Park Cres. Dan Purdie MP shared an update on planning for the study on the duplication of the Sunshine Motorway which extends to the Coolum-Yandina Rd and School Rd intersection.
Remember we all have a part to play in ensuring our students are safe when coming to school. Please ensure we share with our children regular the safe options when coming to school, for instance using the crossing, not crossing between cars, and staying on the walk and bike paths. Are we leading by example in following the rules of the road? Children learn by seeing and doing.
School Uniform
I am a strong advocate for the wearing of school uniforms. Our uniform looks fantastic and we have received many positive comments about them. It is great that nearly all our students are able to wear their full uniform every day. There are enormous benefits for ensuring all students wear full school uniform. These include:
- Defining our school identity
- Developing within our students a sense of belonging to our school community
- Provides an opportunity to build and enhance ‘school spirit’
- Promotes a sense of inclusiveness, non-discrimination and equal opportunity
- Enhances the health and safety of students when involved in school activities and excursions
- Complies with our obligations under Occupational Health and Safety Legislation. e.g. Sun Smart and broad-brimmed hats
- Promotes positive community perceptions of our school
- Makes school clothing more affordable by eliminating the risk of peer pressure to wear current fashions and expensive clothes
While we appreciate that there are times when children will be out of uniform, it appears we have a small number of students ‘electing’ not to wear their full uniform. Coolum State School uniform shop is well stocked with supplies of our school uniform, as described in our school's uniform policy. Your support in discussing this with your child is appreciated.
News from 1E
This term in Year 1, we have been learning about measurement. We learnt about the different units of measurement and how we could measure with informal units. We had lots of fun exploring capacity and length through hands on experiences. The students learnt how to measure the capacity of a container with water and we explored length and compared the different heights of students in the class. Below is a snapshot of the students learning.
News from 6N
This term 6N have been working on objective language in English. We thought it would be great to share some Fun Facts about ourselves. So here it is… “Everything you didn’t know about 6N!"
Immogen’s great, great, great, great, great, great uncle is the famous French author, Victor Hugo! Max is a King video gamer and Flynn has a 17 year old cat that is mad at him. Tadhg’s dog’s name is Bunji, which is the Aboriginal word for “mate” and Jake has a sister. Kalani has 16 pets including a snake and 2 Alexandrine parrots who laid eggs that will hopefully hatch in 2 weeks and Josh has a Youtube channel called “Scuttlergaming”. Lucas has recently reached Dan 2 (black belt). He started training when he was 3. Summer has a cat called Peanut. James can pop an eleven o’clock on his ATV and Jaxon specializes in rhythm games. Blake played the role of Captain Hook in drama. Jati is in both the Primary School and the Middle School bands and Aliss likes to run in the rain when it’s thundering. Lucy is the Captain of the Coolum Chargers (school surf team). Kayden has a grumpy, 15 year old cat. Haloe is an amazing artist, Paige has a chocolate lab called Tilly and Ahju plays drums. Grace had a fighting fish called Garrg that died because she didn’t feed it enough. Evie does three styles of dance and placed 3rd out of the whole of Australia for hip-hop. Harper got barrelled on Friday morning and Lily has a toy Cavoodle x King Charles spaniel puppy. Kiarni loves birds, Sophie speaks French and Isaac is brilliant at Maths and Science - 5 of our 6N students were selected for the Alpha class at High School and Mrs Nix has tap danced for over 45 years.
What a fascinating bunch!
Bucket Filling
Bucket Filler Poster Competition
This week voting began for the Yr. 3-6 Bucket Filler poster. We received over 200 entries and 90 were selected for voting. Students were able to view and vote during breaks on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Votes have been counted and the top 20 posters will be shown in a slide show during virtual parade on Friday. All students in all classes will have a chance to vote tomorrow. Next week voting begins for the Prep-2 entries. The video highlights students sharing, how they have filled others buckets this week.
School Mentors
How awesome are our school Mentors!! Mr Moody has been busy getting 26 mentors active across the school. The year 5 and 6 students run games and activities during lunch times, showing younger students how to share, co-operate, be kind and fill our buckets. Coolum is Community!!!

Road Safety Week
The focus this year is to 'Sign up for Road Safety' and put a spotlight on road safety. Last year hundreds of Queenslanders shared their road safety messages online, let's make this year even bigger.
How can you and the family take part… think of a road safety message and put it on a sign – be as creative as you like. Take a photo or video of your sign and make sure your message is clear. Post it to the StreetSmarts website – use the QR code on the left and tag @StreetSmartsQld or #QRSW2021
What can you do with the kids at home? Qld Road Safety week is around the corner! Show your support by kicking those bad driving habits and make our roads a safer place for everyone. Check out the StreetSmarts website for a range of activities and resources (find a word, colouring activities)
NAPLAN Online
We are moving to the online platform for NAPLAN assessments in 2022. To enable this to happen we will be trialling our capacity in regards to devices and connectivity with the server on Wednesday September 1 in the morning session. The students who will complete the NAPLAN assessments in 2022, our present Year 2s and Year 4s, will participate in a School Readiness Test, a ‘practice’ test, to ensure our bandwith on the server can cope with all the devices being used at the same time.
The School Readiness Test exposes the students to the NAPLAN online environment so they will be familiar with this platform in 2022. The ‘tests’ are not marked or returned to the school.

Premier's Reading Challenge
This year’s challenge has now closed. Our book lovers have submitted their record sheets and the count is on.
Teachers are counting their class record sheets to see if their book lists are the longest and if so, will they be triumphant in the most well-read class?
Mrs Gers and Mrs Morris are comparing and searching through all of the student record sheets to identify the most highly read student in each year level and Coolum’s overall most prolific reader. Is it you?
You will have to hold your breath a little longer whilst the counts are completed. Our winners will be announced during the Book Week Parade on August 27.
ICAS Assessments
International Competition and Assessments for Schools
On Wednesday 45 of our students sat the ICAS English assessment. This is the 40th year these tests have been made available to students across the globe. This year 16 000 schools have put forward students to enter from 41 countries across the world. Congratulations to all the CSS students who stretched their brains and choose to enter.
