Excursions
Today we have year 3 and year 5 students on excursions to Sealife and the Wetlands. Excursions are an important component when we are planning our curriculum. The benefits of school excursions and incursions are:
- Provides another dimension to class-based learning and helps reinforce what has been taught in the classroom - students may get to learn in a new environment with new teachers or instructors.
- Students are excited and energised by the anticipation of leaving the classroom and school environment. Fun school excursions will help students retain the information they have learnt on their trip.
- Children have the opportunity to learn about and see new things in a less structured environment with more learning styles available - student learning can be hands on or interest-driven and they may be excited to learn something from someone new who is an expert in their field.
- Exposure to new experiences - outside the classroom, students have the opportunity of being exposed to new experiences and observe new things that are not available at school, such as rare and exotic wildlife and plants, different cultures and tours/visits to iconic buildings and areas.
- Social skills - getting out of the classroom gives children an opportunity to spend time with each other in a new environment without the structure of the classroom. School excursions often require students to spend time in small groups, observing, chatting and learning.
Thank you to the teachers, parents and our community that support our students during these learning opportunities.
Label Clothing
With the cooler mornings and warmer days many students take off the jumpers by mid-morning. Please ensure jumpers and hats are clearly labelled in order that they be returned to their owner.

🎵 🎤 Choral Fanfare! 🎤 🎵
Tomorrow we have 3 of our school's amazing choirs performing in Choral Fanfare ... "Choral Fanfare is a biennial statewide program celebrating talented choirs in Queensland state schools. The program showcases the outstanding vocal talents from state school choirs through an emphasis on improving the quality of and promoting the highest possible standard of performance, striving for excellence and encouraging participation"
We are so excited to have our 🎵 Junior Voices (Year 2/3) 🎵 Beat Boys (Year 2/3) and 🎵 Senior Voices (Year 4/5/6) represent our school. And based on their performance on parade last Friday, we know they are going to sound simply sensational and do our school, and themselves very proud.

Chess News
Last week some of our awesome Coolum chess players went to Mountain Creek State School to be involved in the Sunshine Coast Age Championship Chess Tournament. There were over 300 other excited chess players ready for a challenge. Enzo, Sam, Remy R, Cayden, Reeve, Remy F, Isabella and Riley were up for the challenge.
Chess games are full of highs and lows. One minute you think you have your oppositions king cornered, and the next minute a knight jumps over the pawn to wreck your plans and you have to rebuild and plan your attack again. Chess takes patience and resilience, it’s not so fun when you are on a losing streak, but all of the Coolum students who attended on the day showed these qualities in abundance.
Our team faced opposition from other coast schools such as Buddina, Mountain Creek, Sunshine Coast Grammar and Nambour Christian College, to name but a few. Throughout the day, all of our players showed determination and persistence. There were some wins and some losses but they all left with a smile and great sportsmanship.
Special mention goes to Cayden in 5K and Sam in 6G who both received special mentions for their success on the day. Cayden was only ½ a point off a trophy and Sam got into the top 10 in his age group.
Students at Coolum can play chess every day, should they wish, at second break in the Japanese room. Our club meets each Tuesday to help people to learn and improve, also in the Japanese room. Everyone is welcome.

P-2 STEM Extravaganza
On Friday 5 May, nominated students from Prep to Year 3 took part in a fun-filled day of STEM investigations, experiments and activities. It was great to see students so engaged in their learning. One student even said it was ‘the best day of my life’ which Richard and his dedicated team from the Sunshine Coast Environmental Education Centre, who facilitated the day, certainly appreciated. Congratulations to all students who attended!

Containers for Change at Coolum
Meet Coolum State School’s semester one’s, Container for Change Boys from 6Q. Finn, Curtis, Finnlay, Mikhail, Malachi and Lochie.
Each week these awesome students help raise money for our school. How do they do that you ask? Well at Coolum we ask our students to throw a variety of containers marked with the 10c recycling logo into our special container collection bins. This is part of our containers for change recycling project operated by the PCC. Sadly, it’s more than just containers that go into our bins, so this wonderful team from 6Q volunteer to ensure only the correct items go to the recycling facility so that our contributions will be accepted.
Each Friday they sort through the bins removing leftover liquid, straws and rubbish from the container bins before they are sent to the Containers for Change depot. You can imagine what an unpleasant job this can be, but rarely a complaint is received.
This term they are working with the school Environmental Team students to learn about recycling and what should actually be being put in the recycling bins around school. The aim is to develop and educate other students in school to make sure that only the correct items are placed into the bins.
You can help the boys too! Before you put your drinks cartons, bottles and cans into the container for change bins
- Pour any leftover liquid into a sink or bubbler and then rinse it away.
- Put straws and lids into a normal bin
- Put all other rubbish in the general waste bins.
Watch out for updates from the Environmental Team about classroom recycling bins, do you know what should be put into those?
Thanks for your help!

- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
