Principal's Report
What an amazing few days with so many changes. Who would have thought this time last week that we would be conducting online learning this week?
I have been glued to the Olympics cheering on our Australian team across the last two weeks. I must mention two stories that I think typify values we try and instil in our students.
Firstly, Alex Porter who was racing in the men’s cycling Team Pursuit on Monday afternoon and crashed at 68km per hour after the handlebars detached from his bike. Alex was extremely lucky and was not injured. After five years of daily practice, monitoring his nutrition, monitoring sleep and focussing upon winning Olympic Gold, the gold medal had slipped away in one crash that he had no control over. Alex then displayed resilience by not giving up. Despite a number of injuries and the extreme disappointment of missing the gold medal due to the crash, he re-joined his team with a new bike and rode again. The team worked hard to finish mid field.
Another example of perseverance came to us in the swimming pool. Ariarne Titmus, our ‘adopted QUEENSLANDERRRR” travelled to Japan to compete against one of the most accomplished female swimmers in the world - the American Katie Ledecky who held 17 individual Olympic and World Swimming event gold medals. Once again Ariarne showed perseverance to keep attending training each day and reviewing her data with her coach. Whilst we are asleep in the early morning cold, Ariarne would be in the pool. She demonstrated perseverance, commitment and effort over many years to win gold in Japan. She also dealt with the extreme pressure of racing arguably the most successful female swimmer in this modern time.
Hopefully these two stories emphasise to our children that whilst medals are acknowledged, the values and effort that sit behind the medals are the things that we truly celebrate.
Thank you also for your support over the last few days as we moved our school to learning at home mode. At this stage the lockdown will remain until 4pm Sunday 8 August 2021. Once we have further information we will communicate this to you. We will continue to email and also post on our Facebook Page. Should the lockdown be extended next week, hard copy learning materials will be available from the School Rd drop off zone from Midday. If you have questions about the learning that has been planned please contact your class teacher by email. Many of our staff are working from home and will be able to respond quickly via this medium.
We are aiming to keep our home learning as self-directed as possible. We have taken on board your feedback from last time about developing work that reinforces previously learning from earlier in the term. Please do not panic if your child does not complete all work. I can assure you that once we all comeback together onsite, we will work together to continue our learning.
I encourage you all to stay informed of the latest health developments relating to COVID-19 by regularly visiting the Queensland Government Website.
I once again thank all parents and carers for your support and understanding during this lockdown. I look forward to bringing our whole school community back together again as soon as we are able to safely do so and welcome your wonderful children back to School.

News from 2Z
2Z had a great start to the term, refreshed from a winter holiday we were ripping into informative texts, multiplying and dividing, exploring changes in transport throughout history and then……..lockdown. As I write, the way the next few weeks will go is uncertain, so we are hoping everyone is staying safe, well and wondering if we will be ‘2Z at school’ or ‘2Z remote learning’. We are looking forward to the rest of the term if things return to normal because we have so much to do!
Here are a couple of photos of 2Z tackling some problem solving challenges from the past weeks

Noosa District Trials
Over the last two weeks 42 of our athletes competed at the Noosa District Track and Field Trials. We kicked off the trials on Wednesday 21 July after school, with the 1500 metre event. Seven of our students represented the school in this event over various age groups. We received a first place in both the 10 years girls (Millie) and 12 years girls (Livy). Discus was then held on Friday 23 July after school and we had seven students representing our school in this event. We received a first place in the 10 years boys (Riley), first place 11 years boys (Mitchell), first place 11 years girls (Lucy) and a second place in the 12 years girls (Ziggie)
On Tuesday 27 July we headed off again for the whole day carnival. The morning started off with the 800 metre races. A cracking pace was set by all our athletes and we came away with second place in the 10 years girls (Millie) and boys (Jonty). Our 12 years girls came home with a first, second and third place (Ellie, Belle and Livy).
Next up we had shot put. The 10 years boys placed second and third (Saul and Riley), 10 years girls third place (Abby) and 11 years girls second place (Ploy).
We then came back to the track with the 200 metres. Again, our athletes did our school proud with some amazing results. We had 10 students make it through to the finals for the 200 metre, with a first place in the 10 years boys (Marcus) and 12 years boys (Zeph), second place in 11 years boys (Mitchell) 11 years girls (Jordan) and our 12 years girls came away with second and third (Belle and Ziggie).
It was time to go back to the field events with some jumping giants to compete in Long Jump and High Jump. We received a first and second place in 10 years boys Long Jump (Marcus and Jonty), second in 10 years girls (Mahala), another first for 11 years girls (Jordan), 12 years boys third place (Zeph) and 12 years girls a second and third place (Ziggie and Belle). In the High Jump we came away with a second place in the 10 years boys (Riley), 11 years girls second place (Tilly) and 12 years girls a second and third place (Ziggie and Ava).
Finally, it was back to the track for our last event of the day with our sprint stars ready to go in the 100 metres. Eight of our athletes made it through to the finals and we came away with a second in 10 years boys (Marcus), first in 12 years boys (Zeph) and our 12 years girls came second and third (Belle and Ziggie).
Overall Coolum State School came out on top and won the Noosa District Carnival! Our athletes represented our school with so much pride, a big congratulations to all our athletes that competed throughout the day. We now have 16 students going on to represent Noosa District at the Regional Trials, to be held at USC on 1 and 2 September - Saul, Riley, Millie, Mahala, Marcus, Jonty, Ploy, Tilly, Jordan, Lucy, Mitchell, Belle, Ziggie, Ellie, Livy and Zeph. We wish these students all the best at the Regional Trials.
Bucket Filling
What is bucket-filling?
Bucket-filling is a term used in education to refer to positive attitudes and behaviour.
It relies on the analogy that every person carries with them an invisible bucket.
This bucket contains a person's feelings and emotions.
When the bucket is full, this represents us feeling happy and contented.
However, when it is empty, we feel low, upset and dissatisfied.
Bucket-fillers are those who act in a way that fills another person's bucket and refers to those who practise kindness and good behaviour.
The analogy comes from the book How Full Is Your Bucket? by Tom Rath and Donald O. Clifton.
All students at Coolum State School have been introduced to the idea of bucket filling. We have watched videos on parade and we have been promoting our poster competition. When we are back at school students will vote for posters entered in this competition. There will be two winners, one from Prep-Yr 2 and one from Yr 3-Yr 6. These posters will be printed and displayed in all classrooms, as we continue to promote bucket filling throughout the school.

Coolum @Home Learning
A big thank you to all Coolum families for being supportive and flexible with our @home learning. By now you should have received a learning plan providing work up to and including Friday 6 August. If you haven’t received the plan you can either contact your child’s classroom teacher or you can access learning plans via our Student Space SharePoint (see details below). We have aimed to put together a plan with a mixture of online, and pen and paper activities. Each Year level plan will clearly outline learning activities with relevant hyperlinks to websites and supporting documents. Your child might like to keep all of their work together in a book or folder. This will enable them to share their work with their classroom teachers or classmates when things are back to normal.

2020 Olympics-Olympic Connect
2020 Olympics In Japan and Olympic Connect - tomodachi
It is great to see both the host nation Japan and Australia doing so well in the Olympic games. In the spirit of the Olympic games uniting the world, Year 5 and Year 6 students from Coolum State School have been communicating via video conferencing with students from Tatsuichi Elementary School in Nara city Japan. The program “Olympic Connect Tomodachi” (which means friend in Japanese), was created by the Australian Olympic committee to celebrate the Olympic spirit and forge positive long-lasting international relations between participating schools.
Coolum students shared greetings and interests in Japanese as well as presented on topics such as; their home town, school life and sports.
Fortunately, the program will continue post Olympics with the focus moving beyond just language exchange into cross cultural collaborative projects.
With globalization rapidly increasing there is a need for students to relate to and communicate across cultures, especially the cultures and countries of Asia. In doing so, students become active and informed citizens developing an appreciation of and respect for social, cultural diversity, and a sense of global citizenship.
