Term 4 Week 2 2022
Principal's Report
Welcome back for term 4 which is jam packed with events for students to demonstrate their learning and for families and the community to come together and celebrate. Next week is one of the biggest events on the calendar, the Coolum Carnival! For those new to our school and community this is one of the biggest events in the area with rides slides, games, food, pig racing and everyone’s favourite fireworks. The junior oval off Barns Lane is open for parking during the event. We look forward to welcoming you all along.
Strategic Plan 2023-2026
Following our school review in term 2, our school staff, parents and students have been involved in developing our school’s strategic direction for 2023 – 2026. Our focus is Engaging in Excellence with a commitment to providing systematic engaging learning opportunities for all students to develop their skills to be successful learners. To achieve this, we have four focus areas 'Connected Curriculum', 'Access for All', 'Quality Teaching' and 'Alignment'. During this term we will develop our schools plan for 2023 which will outline how we will work towards our strategic agenda. These documents will be available on our school website once finalised.
Mountain Bike Trail and Indigenous Tucker and Culture trail.
Many of you will have witnessed a new addition to our school oval under construction. The first stage of this new area includes a mountain bike trail. The trail is the culmination of planning by students in consultation with trail builders and the Sunshine Coast Council. We are hoping for this area to be completed in the coming weeks. It will add value during lunchtime programs and our P.E. program. Well done to those students and parents on your commitment to the design. This project has been funded through the proceeds of Coolum Carnival.

Coolum Carnival
The biggest night of the Coolum State School calendar is fast approaching, Friday 21 October!
Come along and enjoy a night full of carnival fun starting at 3:30pm. Take part in the numerous side show alley games that will be available including Pluck a Duck, Pick your Nose, Knockems, Catch a Cray, Smash a Plate and many more. Have fun swirling, spinning and sliding on the rides by purchasing a ride armband that can be used throughout the night for an unlimited amount of times.
Feeling hungry? Grab a delicious bite to eat from the huge variety of food stalls available including Hot Dogs, Hot Chips, Nachos, BBQ burgers or something from the Canteen. To satisfy that sweet tooth craving how about some mouth-watering donuts, fairy floss or high tea.
Last but definitely not least, settle in for the night and watch the stunning fireworks display that will be showcased at 8:30pm.
For all of this amazing activity and action to happen we encourage you to please volunteer for your child’s stall, bring in some lucky bottles and help support your child’s class to win the class party or if you have some lovely preloved items to donate to the second-hand stall we would appreciate these as well. Please bring your donated items to the library.
To get a head start purchase a pre-paid ride armband or ride tickets from the online link which is open now at https://schoolshoponline.net.au/coolumstateschool/eventdetails.aspx?ID=584 or come along to 6P’s classroom which will be open before school from Monday 17 October. Make sure you have plenty of cash and coins ready to go for easy purchase of items on the night.
We can’t wait to see you all there for a night full of carnival fun and excitement!
News from 4B
Wow, what a year it has been! We feel so grateful for many things in 4B and always try to be positive, have lots of fun and be kind to each other. Here is a snapshot of all the fun we have had so far…….
We enjoyed sports day where all our true colours came out! It was great having swimming lessons in Term 1 to cool us down on those hot summer days! We also had an amazing time doing the Rainbow Run at our school to end off a busy Term 3.
In Science we have learnt about natural materials, rocks and erosion, forces, made our own playground, dropped our egg packages from a height to see if our eggs would survive and this term we are looking forward to learning about life cycles and endangered animals. We’ve made our own travel itineraries, written stories, welcomed new students into our classroom and had fun taking part in Bike Education. We had a fabulous time on Year 4 camp where we participated in many activities that were quite challenging and came home exhausted after 3 days of non-stop action! 4B loved dressing up as our favourite book character for Book Week.
We have made tangrams and painted beautiful pictures in Art and did some excel during ICT lessons. During Japanese, we made origami and learnt more about Japan and its people. From singing new songs and playing new instruments in Music, to learning new games in PE, we have had a brilliant time! The most fun we have as a class is when we have Funday Friday reward day on the last Friday of every month. We play team games, make cubby houses, create shops and bring our own games in from home to play with our friends. Last term, we participated in the Bike On program and enjoyed a Science Spectacular presentation with Dr Rob for Science Week. We’ve had some great achievements in our talented class and their enthusiasm to participate and represent our school does not go unnoticed….various team sports, Choir and Eisteddfod, Chess, Premier’s Reading Challenge, World of Maths, Coolum AllStarz Dance Team and Instrumental Music. As well as all of this, we kept on top of learning, but remembered to have fun along the way!
We enjoyed filling each other’s buckets by saying and doing kind things for one another and loved learning about France and Hawaii in English. This term, we look forward to learning more about narrative texts and information texts. Everyone in 4B cannot wait to perform their parade item next week and the week after, advertising our amazing Coolum Carnival! Wow, what a busy, fun year it’s been already!!! Well done 4B, keep up the great work!!

Kids in Action News
This week, the year 6 ‘Kids in Action’ environmental group launched their ‘Waste Warrior Passport’ for Coolum State School kids.
Students get a signature on their ‘Passport’ for every 5 pieces of rubbish they pick up. When their passport is full there is a treat from the tuckshop for helping keep our school rubbish free.
The Kids in Action group have come up with the slogan 'The earth with thrive if you pick up 5’ which they hope will be an achievable goal for picking up rubbish every day, to make it a habit for Coolum kids.
Well done team!

Primary School Netball Cup 2022
During the school holidays, when most people were enjoying the sunshine at the beach, Coolum State School Netball team travelled to Bundaberg to participate in the Primary School Netball Cup.
The days were hot and the girls played hard over the two day competition. There were 7 games each day with teams from all over the state travelling and participating in the Primary Cup. All of the girls are commended on their positive approach to each and every game as well as their fabulous sportsmanship.
The girls placed in the top 20 and we look forward to participating again next year.
Huge thanks to Mrs Withell and Mrs Proctor for all their efforts with school netball!

Also, well done to our Wizard of Oz leads, who were beyond excited to be able to jump back into their characters one more time and perform the 'Jitterbug' to a very appreciative audience.

RideScore Active Schools
REGISTER NOW!
- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
We are one of nine Sunshine Coast schools that have been invited to trial the RideScore Active Schools Program in 2022.
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
