Term 3 Week 10 2022
Principal's Report
Happy Holidays
Thank you all for a wonderful term 3! There has been so much happening this term for students to be engaged in from learning in their classrooms, excursions, Paint the Town Read, cycle skills, musical, book week, cheerleading and surfing competitions, year 4 camp, sporting competitions and much more no wonder we are tired!!! Have a relaxing break stay safe and we look forward to seeing you all back on Tuesday 4 October.
The Wonderful Wizard of Oz!!!!
Congratulations to all who were involved in the production of this years Wizard of Oz. The two performances last weekend were the results of many hours of rehearsals, trials, tribulations and celebrations for the cast, teachers, support crew and parents. To say our community is proud is an understatement. A special mention to Mrs Nix whose vision for Oz started 2 years ago, to see it all come together was very special.
An amazing $1430 was raised in the raffle and donations. This money will be donated to Cittamani Hospice in memory of past student, Rihanna Quarry, who passed away last year. Rihanna played Glinda the good witch back in our 2012 production of the Wizard of Oz.
Coolum State School has a musical every 2 years, I wonder which year 3 and 4 students Mrs Nix and her merry band of helpers has her eyes on.
Bike Trail Update
Next term Coolum will start ripping and shredding the trails on our new mountain bike trail. Over the school holidays Trailworx will build the trail that our students designed over the last year. Our students have been very patient waiting for the rain to disappear so the construction can begin. Keep an eye next term for opportunities to come and ride with us.
RideScore
Thank you to all of our RideScore families. In the recent RideScore interschool challenge we were narrowly pipped at the post by Buddina State School. Stay tuned for more competitions next term.

News from 4Z
This term, 4Z has been busy looking at the facilities the Coolum community has to offer, in particular Tickle Park. After agreeing that Tickle Park is not age appropriate for children over the age of 5, we wrote a persuasive proposal to the council asking for an upgrade and redesigned the park to meet the design brief. We then chose one piece of equipment from our new designs and made a model. Here are some of our models:

Kids in Action - Kids Teaching Kids
Last week our wonderful Year 6 KIA team went to the KIA 10th anniversary kids teaching kids project day, held at Maroochydore Botanical Bushlands. This year their focus has been on understanding the connection between the land and water. Our school was nominated as this years 'Waste Warriors' and opened the event with a main stage performance.
It was a soggy day but undaunted by the weather and the crowd of 200 students from other schools they performed a short play to introduce the day. With our motto, ' Pick up 5 and the Earth will thrive' front and centre, they explained how easily litter that is dropped on the land can wash and blow into our waterways, then move down to the sea and cause pollution and injury to the wildlife.
Ella and Mikayla respectfully gave an Acknowledgement of Country and Ploy introduced our performance. As part of the play Raya, Breeze and Elena suggested alternatives to single use items like 'keep cups', reusable containers, metal straws and encouraged everyone to make an effort to have litter free lunch boxes everyday. Throughout the performance Jake was a great turtle. Tom clearly explained how biodegradable coffee cups can't go into the green waste bin and made sure people understood they can only be composted in commercial facilities.
During the day our group participated in a variety of student led workshops run by other school students. These shared a variety of information including the need to keep the oceans safe for wildlife and the Bribie Island break. They investigated STEM projects for cleaning the ocean and caring for turtles and then created turtle and leaf art. The team carried out a waste audit with our mentor Renee Currenti from Enviro Comm and wrapped up the day winning a Birdwing Butterfly Vine for their quiz answering skills.
Our students were enthusiastic and respectful participants throughout the day and despite wet feet from the regular showers smiled lots. They will now continue to share their motto in school, ' Pick up 5 and the Earth will thrive!' and continue to encourage Coolum State School to be a litter free school.

Wizard of Oz Wrap Up
Finally, it is “Curtains” for the 54 cast members and the crew of Coolum’s sixth production, “The Wizard of Oz”. And what a spectacle it was! With wicked witches, bubbling spells, magic ruby-red shoes and plenty of allies along the way. The Coolum State School musical went off without a hitch!
The actor’s superb performances brought the 1055 audience members to the edge of their seats, with their, at times wild and often moving display of singing and dancing. However, the real magic was behind the scenes. This unbelievable production couldn’t have gone on without our marvellous teachers. They frantically changed costumes, sets and microphones, yet all the same managing to keep their cool.
As for us, the cast of 2022, what can we take away from being a part of the musical? Friendship, and a feeling of joy. We walk away with happiness engraved into our memories. Being a part of this incredible musical team gave us confidence, courage, kindness and most of all a home away from home.
So, with three clicks of our heels and an all-mighty roar from the audience and a fabulous finale, the musical may have ended, but the experience will last a lifetime.

Our Year 6 Student Councillors have been very busy coming up with some great ideas regarding how to beautify our school even more. They would like to paint our Year 4, 5 and 6 toilets near the tuckshop but we need some talented artists/painters to help us plan some creative designs and inspiring quotes, and implement and co-ordinate this project. We will supply the paint, you supply the talent.
Our student councillors would love to assist in the painting of this project. If this is you, please call our Administration Office on 5471 9300 and leave a message for Mrs Albrecht to express your interest.

RideScore Active Schools
REGISTER NOW!
- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
We are one of nine Sunshine Coast schools that have been invited to trial the RideScore Active Schools Program in 2022.
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
