Principal's Report
Welcome to our new format Newsletter. We are excited to be moving to this online platform for the school newsletter which will make it easier to provide links to videos of student learning, colour images and interactivity. The newsletter will also work on a variety of platforms making it easier to read on mobile devices. If you have any feedback on the content of the newsletter or things you’d like to see or topics you’d like us to cover please let us know by emailing info@coolumss.eq.edu.au.
Building Resilience
We can Recalculate in life when things are not going as planned. In his latest article, Steve Francis reminds us it is okay and, in fact, a part of the busy world we now live in to stop, think and move off, sometimes in a new direction. Constant pressure from our workplaces, homes, and community can result in us not only losing a sense of the direction we are heading in, but also the importance of the destination we were heading to. COIVD has and continues to have an impact on our lives and many of us have reflected upon our life journey and destination. When was the last time you re-calculated your route?
Coolum Carnival
Let’s stay COVID free Coolum because we are planning for the Coolum Carnival to return this year on Friday 22/10/21. Keep this date in your diaries as we raise funds for our school playscapes and outdoor learning environments.
SafeST Update
Following on from feedback from parents and the local community through the Safe Schools Transport committee Cr Suarez has followed up with advocating for safer pedestrian access along Park Cres. As a result, a new footpath is being constructed along the western side of Park Cres between Coolum-Yandina Rd to Pandanus Ave.
School Opinion Survey:
The suite of 2021 School Opinion Surveys will be open between 15 and 30 July 2021.

Year 4 Olympics
Coolum Mini Olympics: 4M and 4B
The Olympic spirit of 2021 is alive and well in 4M and 4B. This Monday we commenced the Olympics with a dazzling Opening Ceremony. We started the ceremony with an Acknowledgement of Country and a reading of the Olympic Oath. Next the Olympic torch was run from competitor to competitor. Everyone could almost feel the heat of the torch as it sailed past (don’t worry it’s only cellophane!)
We then were very lucky to see all competitors perform at this ceremony. Competitors from the South American countries of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, Venezuala performed chants and dances brilliantly. The atmosphere was electric when the African competitors took to the stage. Competitors from Egypt, Ghana, Madagascar, Morocco and Zambia lit up the arena and dazzled everyone before them! Not only are we athletes in 4M and 4B but we are also creative and electrifying cultural ambassadors!
Then the Games commenced! Our first events were the Steeple Chase (obstacle course) and Cycling (skipping). The Olympic spirit of fair sportmanship was evident as teams cheered each other on. We finish this week with the Javelin and Volleyball. We wonder what next week’s events of Gymnastics and 100m Sprint have in store for us?
Will 2021 be Madagascar’s first ever Olympic medal? We will have to wait and see. It will be a sad day when the Closing Ceremony comes along but that only promises to be another exciting experience for 4M and 4B competitors!

Boys Soccer
On Monday the Junior Boys Football team competed in the Sunshine Coast Finals of the South East Qld School Cup. Our first match was against Mooloolaba which we won 3-2 in a very tight encounter. We then played Southern Cross Christian College in the final. It was another close game but we took our chances well and were victorious 3-1. We will now represent the Sunshine Coast at the state titles on August 20 at Maroochydore. (Jason Quinn)
Online safety for parents and carers
As parents and carers you know your child better than anyone and have the best opportunity to support and guide them to have safer online experiences. Below is a summary from eSafety.gov.au/parent and https://dollysdream.org.au. Both sites cover some of the key online safety issues for young people and include a range of practical tips and advice for parents and carers.
Cyberbullying
Cyberbullying is the use of technology to bully a person or group with the intent to hurt them socially, psychologically or even physically. Examples of cyberbullying include: abusive texts, emails and hurtful messages, images or videos imitating, excluding or humiliating others, nasty online gossip and chat, or creating fake accounts in someone’s name to trick or humiliate them.
I think my child is being bullied
Your child may not tell you if they are experiencing bullying behaviour online because of a fear it might make things worse for them or they may lose access to their devices and the internet.
Signs to watch for: being upset after using the internet or their mobile phone, changes in personality, becoming more withdrawn, anxious, sad or angry appearing more lonely or distressed. Unexpected changes in friendship groups, a decline in their school work, changes in their sleep patterns, avoidance of school or clubs, a decline in their physical health, or becoming secretive about their online activities and mobile phone use.
What can I do?
Talk to your child about cyberbullying before it happens. Together you can work out strategies to address any potential issues and reassure them you will be there to support them. If your child is experiencing cyberbullying:
Listen, think, stay calm — talk to them about what happened, try to remain open and non-judgemental, ask them how they feel and ensure they feel heard. Collect evidence — it is a good idea to collect evidence, such as screenshots, of the bullying behaviour, in case you need to report it later on. Block and manage contact with others — advise your child not to respond to bullying messages and help your child block or unfriend the person sending the messages. Report to site or service — many social media services, games, apps and websites allow you to report abusive content and request that it is removed. Report to eSafety — if serious cyberbullying is affecting your child and you need help to get the material removed from a social media service or other platform you can make a cyberbullying report to eSafety. Get help and support — check in with your child regularly about how they are feeling. If you notice any changes that concern you, get help through a counselling or online support service.
I am worried my child might be bullying others
If your child is treating others badly, is dismissive of their feelings or targeting or intentionally excluding a particular child or group, they could be seen as someone who bullies. If they also socialise online there is a chance they may be bullying that person or group online too. Signs your child may be bullying online can be: Talking about others in an aggressive or unkind way. Deliberately leaving others out of the friendship group. Having money or possessions which don’t belong to them. Behaving in ways that are violent or threatening. They are concerned about popularity and status. They are secretive about their tech use. Laughing a lot at things online and won’t show you what’s funny. If it has happened:
Understand the cause
Try to find out what led to your child bullying someone. Ask, for example: Are they feeling angry, frustrated, or disengaged at school? Are they looking for attention? Are they bullying other people because that’s what their friends do, or are they eager to fit in? Do they see bullying being normalised elsewhere – eg. on reality TV, YouTube videos or social media? Have they seen family members treating other people disrespectfully.
Find out what happened
Although the situation is upsetting, it’s important to stay calm. Get the full story, including where the bullying happened. Encourage them to put into words what happened, why they did it, and what they thought was going on. Build empathy - Explain what bullying is, and why it’s wrong. Be clear about how serious this is. Encourage them to reflect on how the bullied person must be feeling. Empathy skills are always a work in progress. Help your kids build these skills by helping them to understand other people’s feelings and the importance of showing kindness.
Change the behaviour
Make clear the bullying must stop at once, regardless of ‘who started it’. Apply any relevant family rules and consequences.

Facilities
Resource Centre Upgrades
We are very excited to have some works currently being completed on our Resource Centre. Over the holidays contractors took over and removed, repitched and replaced the roof on the Resource Centre. Last week and this week we have had the contractors busy at work on the inside to replace the old airconditioners. It has been a big month for the Resource Centre and we can't wait for the kids to be able to access the updated facility.
The Plaza Refurbishment
We have given approval for the blue stage area of the Plaza to be refurbished. The blue astroturf will be removed and the stage area will be cladded with ecodeck. We look forward to these works being completed over the coming months.
Water Mitigation Works
The school is working with various key stakeholders to address the water that lays towards the western end of the school. Engineers have been engaged to look at solutions to assist in ensuring that the water flows away from buildings and classrooms are more accessible in heavy rains.
Air Conditioning Update
Tenders have closed and we are waiting to find out who the sucessful contractor is to be to complete our air conditioning installation. Once we have met with the contractors we will share any class movements that will need to happen to make the installation of class air conditioners as smooth as possible.
