Term 2 Week 6 2022
Principal's Report
School Review
Thank you to the many staff, students, parents and community members who have been involved with our school review during the last 4 days. Through their conversations with you all Brad, Richenda, Clare and Lee have done a wonderful job of capturing the essence of Coolum State School. They have provided fantastic feedback on the distance travelled for our school and provided some recommendations for the schools next steps. While the report is still a few weeks away I can share they have been thoroughly impressed with our school, the culture that focuses on the success for every child, the building of community and the curriculum design that aims to help our students make sense of the world in which they live. Once the report is finalised it will be published on the school website and unpacked in planning meetings to inform our next four-year strategic plan.
The reviewers were more than happy to get in amongst it while they were here.

News from 5K
Our class recently took part in the Unleashing Personal Potential program. Here's what they had to say about it:
Finn - Today we went down to the hall and learned all about relationships on friends and family. We also learned about filling buckets and dipping. We did fun activities like Freeze Frame, Charades and this peg game. The people who were teaching us were Lochie and Cody. These legendary people put us through two sessions with the whole of year five.
Otila - We did charades with a partner that we wouldn’t usually hang out with or did not know. We also did a peg game where you put a peg on your sleeve and people try and get the peg and try to get the most and then the second round of the peg game we had to try and lose our pegs. We learned that not every friendship is perfect and there are ups and downs. We also learned it is not good to be passive and aggressive but it is good to be assertive it means you listen and agree.
Julian - We learned about bucket filling and friendship and played games like peg games, statues and charades and that’s all the favourite things I did on the friendship lesson.
Liam - We learnt how to say a nice conversation. We had to partner up with people that you didn’t know. We learnt about bucket filling, then we had to do some games like 5 finger bingo and peg tiggy. We also learnt about bulls, owls and jelly fish.
Carmen - We all had a partner and we did activities, and learned that we have to be nice to people because if you don’t you can make them feel left out, and be an owl not a jellyfish or a bull, and help people who are hurt or in danger.
Brooklyn - I learnt what a good friend is.
Bryce - I learnt how to be a good friend and that friendships are never perfect.
Michael - I liked these 2 things about the UPP: 1: Playing games, 2: I liked learning about that we’re similar but still unique.
Willow - I learned that it’s bad to be a bull and a jellyfish but good to be an owl. A bull is someone aggressive who is kind of saying, ‘I win, you lose’. A jellyfish is someone who walks away and is kind of saying ‘you win I lose’. An owl is someone who discusses something to come across an agreement and is saying, ‘you win, I win’.
Isaac - Some of the things I liked at the UPP session are: it was fun, there were good activities. I learnt how to be good friend. And It’s wise to be an owl.
Fooga - 1: I made a new friend :) because I barely have any, 2: We did fun games with pegs, 3: being owl is good and jellyfish bad and bull is not, 4:PANCAKE=STOP+SIT+LISTEN+LOOK
Indiana - We learnt new things and played heaps of games like we played a game with pegs and we played a game called window frame which was really fun. But I wish it went all day so we could play more fun games ☹
Layla - What I had learned is that friendships don’t always happen easily. It’s hard to keep them and it’s hard to make them. We had also learned that there is no such thing as perfect, no perfect friend, no perfect anything, all you need is a friend that will help me in the highs and lows. They don’t need to look anything like you and that’s all you need.
Ryder - We learnt about friendship and played a game with pegs.
Florence - Today in the UPP program we played a fun game with pegs where we had to try and get lots of pegs from other people and clip them to our sleeves. We also played a team game called freeze frame, in that we had to make a picture of something and freeze after 90 seconds. We also did some other really fun activities. Overall it was a really fun program.
Sean - I learnt how to be a good friend and how to be a bucket filler not a bucket dipper. And you don’t need to be the winner to be happy.
Marcus - We played fun games like peg games, freeze frame, charades and running to different countries. We learned about bucket filling and bucket dipping and we learned about relationships and all of the types of relationships.
Zoe - I learnt about different types of relationships and what friendship looks like. We also learnt it’s not good to be a bull or a jellyfish because when they handle things they are aggressive or just walk away. It’s actually great to be an owl because owls are wise and they know how to communicate and handle things well if someone is mean to you or if someone is trying to tell you something. This was such a fun experience and I would love to do this again 😊
Yazzy - My class and I went to the Friendship Seminar by the program UPP. It a good learning opportunity to find out about different relationships and how to make friends but I thought that it was quite boring, I prefer normal school days with Math and Spelling. The part that I liked was when we played Freeze Frames (I guess).
Ollie - I learned about other people and friendships.
Skye - At UPP program we played a game with pegs. The point of it was so we could see it was funnier to fill then dip.
Christian - We learned about friendships and played games. My favourite game was pretty much oz tag with pegs and running around.
Nate - Today I played a GAME and did some bucket filling.
Elva - Today at the UPP program we played with pegs and a window frame game. We also learnt about relationships. We did this with all the other grade five classes.
Annabelle - Today in class we went to the hall. There were some very special people there waiting for us with some other grade 5 classes. We had to be paired up with a person we don’t know or are not friends with. We played games, talked about bucket filling and much more. We are very grateful that UPP came today😊

News from 5T
The students of 5T were lucky enough to participate in the Unleashing Personal Potential Program last week. Students explored the power of empathy, active listening and teamwork through charades, freeze frames and partner activities. This was a fantastic opportunity for students to develop new skills about strengthening relationships, respecting and appreciating differences and working collaboratively. It was great to see students working together and building new relationships within the Year 5 level.
5T have shared some of the things they learnt from the day:
- We are all similar and all share DNA together.
- Not every friendship is perfect.
- It is better to fill a bucket than dip.
- You fill a bucket by doing something nice.
- You can make friends by having a conversation or at least introducing yourself.
- If you dip someone else’s bucket it makes you feel even worse than you felt.
- How to be a good friend and a bucket filler.
- Be kind. Don’t be a bucket dipper.
- That we can have a lot of friendships and that friendships can never be perfect.
- Be kind like an owl. Be wise and make a good choice.
- Help others.
- When you fill someone’s bucket it makes you and that person feel happy.
- How to solve conflict.
- How to make friends.
- That how you act affect others because people feel sad when you’re sad.

Kids In Action News
On Friday May 6, our intrepid Kids in Action Team ventured out for their Kids in Action Projects Day, beginning in Nambour. Tom, Breeze, Jake, Mikayla, Elena and Ella joined students from across the coast to explore this year’s theme Catchment Connections. This focuses on the importance of waterways on the Sunshine Coast.
During the day our students participated in a Welcome to Country Ceremony, Breeze and Ella gave our Welcome to Country in front of a respectful audience. This began a day of looking at the ecological and cultural significance of waterways. Coolum students travelled with Coolum State High School, Peregian Springs State School and Maroochydore State School students to Park Lakes Bird Hide where they were given information about the birdlife from Rob a local ecologist. Then it was on to Maroochy Wetlands to listen to Indigenous Stories told by Aunty Brianna and former Coolum State School student Ky and then to investigate how the plants survive the salty environment. Finally, our day ended at Mudjimba Beach. Here we looked at the litter that had been washed up from the ocean. We were able to do some artwork with items we found on the beach.
Coolum State School students have taken on the role as the 'Waste Warriors', over the next few months they will be working with all our students to help Coolum State School be rubbish free! Watch out for news on how you can help.

2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge
We are delighted to invite all Coolum State School students to join in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, between 9 May to 26 August.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2022 challenge is to engage more students to read than ever before! Last year saw more than 168,000 children from around the state participate.
Key dates | Activity |
9 May – 26 August | Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students |
29 August | Student reader record forms submitted to teacher |
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. We look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge.

RideScore Active Schools
REGISTER NOW!
- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
We are one of nine Sunshine Coast schools that have been invited to trial the RideScore Active Schools Program in 2022.
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
