Term 2 Week 4 2022
Principal's Report
Meet the Leadership Team on Fridays
During the break between Senior and Junior parades our leadership team will be milling around at the P&C’s new coffee shop. Come along and say hello, we’d love to catch up with you. We love hearing the ideas you have for our school and community and love sharing what is happening across our school.
Facilities Master plan
The silver lining amongst the clouds and flooding rains is shining through. Next week I will be meeting with Education Queensland Infrastructure team to develop a new master plan for the school’s facilities. We have three priorities during this process
- To ensure we have safe all-weather access to all classrooms.
- Classrooms and facilities that cater for the learning needs of all of students now and into the future.
- Classrooms that foster opportunities to embrace contemporary pedagogical practices.
This is an exciting time for our school to plan for the future needs of our school and community. Please look out for opportunities to provide input into this plan.
Parking in Drop Off Zones
Please ensure you are using the drop off zones on School Road and Barns Lane for their intended purpose. These zones are not to park and walk your child into the school. Everyone is well aware of parking issues at schools during pick up and drop off times. Please help to alleviate everyones stress and keep our kids safe be adhering to the traffic signage around the school.
Safe Schools Transport Committee Meeting
During our latest meeting we had the opportunity to discuss with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) Safety Division and the Sunshine Coast Council Traffic Management teams, the opportunities to extended the walk / bike path along South Coolum Road. The Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) is well aware of this concern and is looking to find a viable option to connect the missing link. Due to the land contours the solutions that have been presented so far are proving cost prohibitive. The school and the Sunshine Coast Council remain committed to looking for a solution. We are also working with the developers of the new Barns Lane farm, Sunshine Coast Council and TMR on the options for parking and pedestrian traffic along Barns Lane.

Unleashing Personal Potential
UPP are looking forward to working with our Year 5 students on Monday 16 May with the Unleashing Personal Potential Program.
SKILLS DEVELOPED AND CONCEPTS COVERED:
- THE POWER OF EMPATHY- focussing on standing as one, respect and appreciating differences.
- BULLYING & THE SCIENCE OF KINDNESS- learning about the potential impacts of bullying and kindness, on others and on ourselves.
- ACTIVE LISTENING- practical skills for strengthening relationships.
- CONFLICT RESOLUTION- learning how to be assertive, rather than passive or aggressive.
- FORGIVENESS VS HOLDING A GRUDGE- "Forgive others not because they deserve forgiveness, but because you deserve peace".
- TEAM WORK- Working collaboratively in teams to achieve more. Structured opportunities to apply what has been learned.
The workshop runs best when students can move freely and interact quickly so we will be working in the Hall. Students will require a pen or pencil and should be wearing their sports uniform. We hope your child enjoys this great opportunity. There is no cost for this.

Cross Country News
Last Friday, 32 of our strongest runners represented our school at the Noosa District Cross Country trials. What a fabulous day it was! The course was tough consisting of hills both up and down, grassed and paved areas as well as an enchanted forest that lead back to the oval to finish. It was just spectacular and very well organised.
Overall as a school we performed very well finishing in third place. Two of our runners Sophie (5C) and Sam (5M) will advance to the regional trial. We wish you both well with your training and race.
Please see some photos we managed to get while manning a station on course.
Well done everyone!

News from 2P
It has been a year interrupted by Covid and heavy rains with consequential flooding but through it all, the 2P students have been steadfast in their attitude to learning and are always doing their best. They are a great class of enthusiastic learners who aim to be successful in whatever endeavours they choose in the future.
During the first term in English lessons, the students worked on analysing many well-known poems as well as writing their own masterpieces. They learnt about rhyming patterns and rhythm which they cleverly used in the written assessment. There were some very creative works produced. Cats went swimming; girls went skipping, running, shopping, talking and fishing; boys went jogging; birds went flying.
Ruby’s poem was about buying clothes:
One day a girl went skipping,
She skipped into the mall.
She bought some clothes and boardshort pants,
And skipped out of the stall.
Darcy’s poem was about his great love of fishing:
One day a girl went fishing,
She caught a baby shark.
She let it go back to the sea,
And walked home through the park.
The busy schedule now sees the class working on creative narratives as well as the learning of specific spelling rules throughout this term.
The class has covered many topics within Mathematics so far this year. Last term, the students were assigned the task of collecting data that they then recorded in a series of pictographs. Lots of numeracy concepts are covered daily and many are enjoying the daily ‘Speed Maths’ challenges. This competitive bunch are always determined to beat their previous results and each others times. Considerable time has been dedicated to the area of money and analogue & digital time. I am surprised that many had very good prior knowledge of both, so we may see some budding business entrepreneurs in the future.
The class is practising for their upcoming parade performance in week five. They are excited, but not quite as much as the class next door who are keen for the regular noise bombardment to cease. ‘The show must go on’, is the well-used catch-cry of all budding thespians, so 2F will have to tolerate it for another week!

2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge
We are delighted to invite all Coolum State School students to join in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC).
The PRC is not a competition but a way to encourage students to develop a love of reading for life. Students are encouraged to select a range of fiction and non-fiction books suited to their reading ability and record books read during the reading period, between 9 May to 26 August.
To complete the challenge:
- Prep to Year 2 must read or experience at least 20 books
- Years 3 and 4 must read at least 20 books
- Years 5 to 9 must read at least 15 books.
Experiencing books can include shared reading, listening to stories, or reading picture books. The aim for the 2022 challenge is to engage more students to read than ever before! Last year saw more than 168,000 children from around the state participate.
Key dates | Activity |
9 May – 26 August | Reading period for Prep to Year 9 students |
29 August | Student reader record forms submitted to teacher |
Every student who completes the challenge will receive a Certificate of Achievement signed by the Premier. We look forward to seeing as many of our students as possible take part in the 2022 Premier’s Reading Challenge.
Reading record forms will be sent home with your child next week.
Happy Reading!

RideScore Active Schools
REGISTER NOW!
- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
We are one of nine Sunshine Coast schools that have been invited to trial the RideScore Active Schools Program in 2022.
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
