Term 2 Week 2 2022
Principal's Report
Welcome Back
Welcome back to term 2, the term we get 2022 back on an even keel! There are many events and opportunities for students this term from Cross Country, Athletics Day, Under 8’s Day, School Review, launch of our school coffee shop, Mother's Day and the refilming of our school song. You can stay updated with these events via the school newsletter, website and facebook. In all of that our students have got off to a flying start with their learning this term. A reminder that our Senior Parade starts at 8:40 am and our Junior Parade at 9:50am on Friday mornings.
School Review
Every Queensland State School is reviewed by the Education Improvement Branch (EIB) at least once every four years. The reviews play an important part in how the department supports school improvement. They provide schools with independent feedback, tailored to their context and needs. Principals use the review findings to work with their school community and Assistant Regional Director (or Principal Supervisor) to develop clear actions to move the school forward. Our School Review will take place over four days commencing 23 May.
Review process
Reviews are conducted by experienced educators trained in the use of the National School Improvement Tool, a nationally recognised framework for reviewing teaching and learning practices. We will have four school reviewers at our school during this time. The reviewers will look closely at our school’s performance data and speak with a wide range of staff, students, parents and community members to get an accurate picture of the school. Unlike many other review systems, schools aren’t ranked or given a performance rating. Instead, the school is given a comprehensive report for consideration. The report details key findings and recommended improvement strategies to maximise student outcomes. This report will be available towards the end of the school term.
Parent and community participation
Feedback from parents and the community is an important part of school reviews, with everyone encouraged to have their say. To register your interest in participating in a review, please contact me via the school office or email info@coolumss.eq.edu.au. The reviewers for our school are Bradley Clark, Richenda Wagner, Lee Gerchow and Clare Grant who will also be available before and after school to talk to parents during drop off and pick up.
RideScore
Help Please! The RideScore program is officially up and rolling. We have 168 students registered in the program, but we need more! We are aiming for 20% of the school population (202) to be registered and currently we only have 16.6%. We are 4th on the leader board, who can help us to get to 3rd,2nd or 1st?
Remember to pair your beacon to your app! Of our 168 students registered, 32 of our students have not paired their beacons. If your beacon isn’t paired, your children will not receive points and you will not receive arrival or departure notifications.
We also have 36 students with zero trips recorded. So please get rolling – help us get active and reduce traffic congestion around the school by riding and scooting to school. Participating children are loving it!
Participating students who have reached 20 points will soon be receiving their new bike lights – these will be distributed via their teacher.
For any queries about the program, please contact ridescore@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au and Colleen and Kari will be only too happy to help you.

Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing Survey
In Week 3 our Year 6 students are invited to take part in the Queensland Engagement and Wellbeing (QEW) Survey.
We know that wellbeing and engagement are important parts of your child’s life at school. The QEW Survey is designed to measure how students view their wellbeing and engagement across different topics. The information we get from the survey helps us better understand and support our students.
An information letter will be sent out to parents and carers. If you have any questions, please contact the school. More information, including FAQs, can be found on the Education website:

RideScore Active Schools
REGISTER NOW!
- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
We are one of nine Sunshine Coast schools that have been invited to trial the RideScore Active Schools Program in 2022.
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
