Term 1 Week 6 2022
Principal's Report
What a week!
Who would’ve thought when we were planning for the start to school during the Christmas break that by week 6 we would have two weeks of Covid closure and then flooding closing the school for 2 days. It’s times like these we continue to be impressed by the Coolum community and the care and compassion that is so readily shared to support those who have suffered. We are aware of a number of families and staff who have suffered significant loss during the recent flooding event and our thoughts are with you during this time. The school had significant water damage to some building, electricity supply, air-conditioners, our black and grey water pumps and our sports sheds. The support from staff, Education Queensland and Qbuild ensured we got back up and running as quickly as possible. We have 2 classes who have had to relocate while repairs are carried to their classrooms. A big shout out to the parents who assisted Mr Moody in cleaning out the sports sheds. Out of adversity there is always a silver lining, for us it is that the school has been brought forward to have a master plan completed of the school facilities. The master plan will consider the school site and the needs of the school to continue to provide a quality education with quality facilities into the future. When this process commences you will have the opportunity to provide feedback through the P&C. Fingers crossed for a smooth end to term 1.

Kindness Culture
Coolum State School is a Bucket Filling School. Last year our poster competition produced three amazing posters. These are seen throughout our classrooms. This year teachers have revisited the meaning of being a bucket filler and classes have viewed the videos below.
Our students in Prep to Year 2 have viewed this video:
Our students in year 3 to 6 have viewed this video:
This year the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence, focuses on a kindness culture. Each week our classrooms are viewing short videos and engaging in discussions on kindness.
News from 4P
It has been a crazy start to the school year so we decided to draw some crazy colour and line art to show how batty we were going with being away from school during the start of the term. Below is a sample of some of the talent we have in 4P. We also had our students’ work displayed in an exhibition during week 5 in the foyer. We hope you like it and we are looking forward to starting our next master project!

Japanese News
On 17 and 18 March our school is excited to host a Japanese Taiko and Flute performance for the whole school.
Taiko Drums & Flutes of Japan
What is the sound of one hand clapping? NOTHING LIKE THIS!!
This highly energetic, visually exciting and entertaining Japanese music performance incorporates performance and audience participation to give students a greater understanding of Japan, both culturally and historically.
Instruments include shakuhachi and fue (flutes), taiko (drums of various sizes) and a variety of other percussion instruments. Student will have the opportunity to join in with both the drumming and songs.
Toshinori Sakamoto is a master TAIKO drummer. He has founded RINDO DAIKO in Kyushu as well as several Taiko teams in Melbourne since settling here in ’95. He performs regularly in festivals and schools throughout Australia and Japan.
Anne Norman is a highly acclaimed musician and composer who took up the shakuhachi in 1986 while living and teaching in Japan. She also plays yokobue and taiko. Anne performs in music/dance theatre productions, solo recitals, world fusion combinations as well as teaching and working as an artist in schools. She has released many CDs, and her shakuhachi music is regularly featured on ABC radio.
Shakuhachi
This Japanese flute with only five finger holes is made of the root end of a heavy variety of bamboo. From around 1600 through to the late 1800’s the shakuhachi was used exclusively as a tool for Zen meditation. Since the Meiji restoration (1868), the shakuhachi has performed in chamber music combinations with koto (zither), shamisen (lute) and voice. In the 20th century, shakuhachi has performed in many types of ensembles in combination with non-Japanese instruments. It’s characteristic haunting sounds, evocative of nature, are frequently featured in film music.
Taiko
These drums come in many sizes and have been traditionally associated with religious rites at Shinto shrines as well as village festivals. In the last 30 years, Taiko drumming groups have flourished in Japan and have become poplar worldwide for their fast pounding rhythms.

RideScore Active Schools
REGISTER NOW!
- Do you live close to school?
- Do your children have a bike or scooter?
- Would you like peace of mind knowing your children have safely arrived at school?
If you answered YES to these questions, then RideScore is for you!
We are one of nine Sunshine Coast schools that have been invited to trial the RideScore Active Schools Program in 2022.
What is RideScore?
RideScore is an incentive-based program delivered by Sunshine Coast Council and We Ride Australia to increase active travel to and from school. The program is open to all students who ride a bike or scooter to school, as these can easily be fitted with beacons.
Participating students will receive a personal sensor (beacon) to attach to their bike or scooter. The school bike storage facility will be fitted with a Bluetooth reader that detects the signal from the beacon and sends a notification to the nominated contact that the student has arrived at or departed the school gate. Please note that the beacon is not a tracking device, it only records school arrivals and departures.
Data is collected by the online platform, enabling incentives to be offered at certain milestones.
Activities will also be planned throughout the school year to promote and encourage active travel, including cycling education classes for all Year 4 students.
How do I register?
Step 1 - Download the RideScore App (Search for ‘RideScore’ in the App Store or on Google Play)
Step 2 – Receive your sign on bag (will be distributed via the classrooms) that includes:
- Your child’s beacon & instructions on how to pair and fit
- Bike Lock
- Scorecard
- Road Safety Information
Step 3 – Start riding or scooting
Step 4 – Visit the RideScore website for great resources and safety tips
