Term 1 Week 4 2022
Principal's Report
It has been fantastic to have all of our students back at school looking so good in their uniform during the last fortnight, and hearing of their wonderful adventures they had during the holidays. Although slightly different to normal, we have had another wonderful start to the school year. The students have got back into their learning from day one and have been challenging their teachers to keep the learning happening which the teachers are enjoying. Thank you for your continued support in helping us to ensure your child has every opportunity to achieve their school and personal goals.
School Hours
Please be aware school does not open until 8:00am. There is no supervision of students provided before this time. We are aware of a small number of students who arrive slightly earlier by school bus and we have processes in place for them. If you require supervision prior to school our OSHC can provide this.
Formal instruction commences at 8:30am. Any student arriving after this time is required to come through the Administration Office and sign in prior to going to class. If you need to collect your child prior to the finish of school at 2:40pm please come to the office to sign them out and the office staff will send for your child to come and meet you. Please do not go straight to the classroom. This process minimises class disruption and ensures we are aware of the movements of students in the event of an emergency.
Bikes and Scooters
It is excellent to see the numbers of students riding and scooting to school. It is even more pleasing to see them wearing helmets and making sure their bike or scooter is safe for riding. We have noticed a large number of bikes that have not been secured once arriving at school. Can you please check with your child if they have a working bike lock to ensure their trusty stead is still there when school finishes.
There is a lot of research showing the benefits to students of active transport to school on their attention during class time. The following link shows the research from Specialized (bike manufacture) who conduct research with a large number of schools over a number of years. https://cyclingtips.com/2017/11/riding-for-focus-specialized-foundation-getting-kids-with-adhd-onto-bikes/
Last year, we worked closely with the Sunshine Coast Council, Covey Associates and Trailworx on designs for a bike skills trial here at school. Some of the funds raised from the Coolum Carnival have been directed to seeing this vision come to life this year. Keep an eye out for the design coming to life.
ICT Consent Form - Online
On Wednesday morning the form was resent to to those families that we are yet to receive a response from. If you received the email (please check your junk and spam folders) it means that we have not received your completed form and we ask you to do so as soon as possible.

News from 1W
1W have been very excited to finally get the year underway. Our students have so many things they are keen to learn about. Luckily we have the whole year to get through the list!
Zephyr, Ashton, Ryan K, Charlotte, Ollie, Indigo and Edie are keen to learn more about writing.
Espy and Alvie are wanting to do some maths, James wants to count to bigger numbers, Leila wants to learn all her numbers and letters and Cooper is hoping the maths will be fun.
Aria and April want to work on their spelling, Jemma, Archie and Hazel are excited for STEM and Manyx and Eli are looking forward to playing soccer, but Rafael doesn’t mind which sport he does – he’ll do any sport!
Kayden just wants to learn everything. Jakobi is here to play. Caden, Mabel and Claire want to work on their colouring in. Ryan C doesn’t know what he wants to learn.
It looks like 1W are going to have a very busy year ahead!

News from 6Q
Greetings from 6Q!
The students of 6Q have leapt into the school year with gusto and are doing their absolute best to make up for lost time.
We spent our first week getting to know each other and settling into our new classroom, it was certainly nice to see all of the smiling excited faces back at school after our Christmas break. The week was capped with the introduction to our Prep Buddies. A fun afternoon was had by both the year 6s and preps as we introduced ourselves and had some outside play in the prep playground.
I asked the students what they are most excited about their final year of primary school, these were their responses:
'Basketball at lunch' Connor
'Year 6 Camp' Chillyee, Evie G, Amber, Ayla, Ruby, Evie T
'Noosa district soccer trials' Kahea and Mass
'Sport on Wednesday's and Friday's' Patrick, Van
'School soccer team' Archie, Leo
'Surf comps' Sunny
'Camp' Hudson, Tomas, Jett
'Rugby league team' Cory
'Sustainable houses in STEM' Blaze
'Musical!' Ploy
'Coolums Got Talent' Roxy
'School camp' Polly and Lola
'Final year of primary school' Jakob
'Being house captain' Lydia
As you can see we have a wide range of interests amongst the 28 students of 6Q. 2022 is going to be an amazing year!

Musical News!!!
I am pleased to announce that this year Coolum is presenting 'The Wizard of Oz'. It is a musical that I hold dear. Ten years ago, in 2012, Coolum presented its first ever production, 'The Wizard of Oz', (that means our original Dorothy is now 21 years old!) and it seemed fitting that on our 10th anniversary, in 2022, that we should revisit the musical that launched such an amazing school tradition. The musical has become an event that the younger students aspire to, and our year 5 and 6 students look forward to auditioning for.
This year’s production is even more special. Sadly, one of our original cast members, Rhianna Quarry who was our beautiful 'Glinda the Good Witch' passed away last year from brain cancer. So, it is only fitting that we pay tribute to such a generous, lovely young woman who was a much-loved member of our school community. We would like to dedicate our performances to her memory.

STEM News
Years 1-3 STEM Lessons
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) lessons have now started with students in Years 1, 2 and 3 working on digital technology concepts. Digital Technology is one half of the Technology learning area and introduces students to computational thinking, algorithms, data and programming using block-based coding. Each year level uses a different robot which we use to understand that all digital systems do the same four things, input, store, process and output data. Students rotate through various activities during the term to learn about creating algorithms (step by step instructions) and program their robots.
In addition, students in Year 3 have a special ‘Starlab’ (https://www.starlab.net.au) presentation booked for Tuesday March 1 in the hall, that is linked to their Science unit ‘Spinning Earth’. Please return your child’s consent form as soon as possible.
As it is the start of the year, we have been revising our three school rules and the expectations that fall under these rules. I’d like to introduce you to Dimitri, one of our SMART learning monsters. Our SMART monsters help us make great choices with our learning and behaviour. This year, we will be learning about Dimitri’s great expectations.
