Term 4 week 8 2021
Principal's Report
Thankyou for a wonderful year.
Welcome to our last school newsletter for 2021. THANK YOU to the Coolum SS staff, parents and wider community for the support you have shown to each and every student who comes through our gates each day full of enthusiasm and ready to learn something new each day. Schools are dynamic ‘people organisations’ and it is only through the support and goodwill of many people that we are able to offer exciting and challenging educational programs. A big thank you and congratulations to the many parents and community members who volunteer their time to help out in a myriad of ways with a variety of learning programs and school events. A special thank you to the P&C members, who have worked tirelessly this year to support the return of the school Coolum Carnival, also as importantly the airconditioning turned on! What they have achieved would not have been such a success without the support of our school community.
A big 'job well done!!' must go to the staff, teaching and non-teaching. They are a dedicated and professional team who are extremely supportive of each other and are committed to ensuring the happiness and well-being of every child in the school. I have previously shared the poem below with staff which was given to me early in my career.
“I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a situation will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.” ― Haim G. Ginott
I can confidently say the staff at Coolum State School create the climate of fair and clear weather and inspire a child to find joy in their life.
Finally and most importantly a special thank you to the children for their industrious efforts, and the manner in which they approach all aspects of their school life. We can all be justifiably proud of our school and its community!
Finally, a special mention to all our Year 6 students who soon complete their primary schooling. Congratulations and we wish you all the best as you commence the next exciting stage in your life; secondary schooling!
On behalf of the staff, I wish all families a safe and happy festive season and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.
Air - Conditioning Update
Thankyou to our whole school community who have worked tirelessly over the last four years to provide air-conditioning to our classrooms. The students and staff are appreicative of all of your efforts in making this happen. A massive thankyou and well done to the members of our P&C who have never lost sight of the end goal. To offset the carbon footprint from the air-conditioning, we are currently working with Education Queensland facilities managers to install solar panels to offset the impact of the additional electricity useage.
Christmas Carols
"It's beginning to feel a lot like christmas", the sounds of christmas are starting to fill the air as students reherase for our carolling evening. We're looking forawrd to seeing you all at our last whole school event of 2021.
Staff Changes for 2022
At the end of the year we will farewell Mrs Christine McInally, Mr Steve Burnett and Mr Scott Boshammer who after many years of teaching and supporting students learning head off on a well earned retirement. We will also farewell Mr Gary Bolten, Mrs Maree Gocke and Ms Madeline Gallagher who are heading off to adventures in new schools while Mr Pat Preston and Mr Atkinson take extended leave. They will all be sorely missed by our school community. They have made significant contributions to our school, and the lives and learning of our current and past students. We wish them all the best! Next year we will welcome to Coolum SS Mrs Coutney Granger and Mrs Kellie Frew. Returning to us from near and far will be Mrs Debie Bryan and Mr Paul Russell.
School Leaders 2022
Congratulations to our School Leaders for 2022.
Luka 5M, Calum 5M, Laylah 5M, and Sienna 5D. All students who nominated for 2022 school leader positions were wonderful and we wish them well with the next round of nominations for house, music and environmental captains.

STEM News
Coolum State High School Partnership
An exciting partnership is on the horizon for Coolum SS. Recently I visited Coolum SHS to see their fantastic technology programs and how our programs can best prepare students for the amazing opportunities that the high school offers. During my visit, it was great to see past Coolum SS students (now in Year 7 and 8) robotics builds, where they were building custom circuits with different components to use in their robots.
In 2022, we will be offering after school robotics and coding programs led by Coolum State High students and Mr. Barry Butler (Technology/Aviation Teacher). This will provide students, initially in Year 6, to investigate digital technologies to a higher level than in the classroom. We also aim to offer a variety of alternative after school extension programs for different year levels in other STEM areas such as advanced coding, 3D printing and drones. More information will be provided next year.
I’d like to thank Mr. Butler for the invitation to visit Coolum State High School and take this opportunity to thank the school for the generous donation of additional drones and robotics equipment to assist with the resourcing of our programs.
Sport
The ANZ Tennis Hot Shots Racquet Roadshow is again providing 30,000 racquets to Prep students around Australia, thanks to ANZ and Tennis. We are one of 774 lucky schools to be receiving racquets. It’s a great opportunity to get our kids moving, both at home and at school! The students have also been given a special certificate to take home to celebrate their new tennis racquets.
ANZ is encouraging all parents to share a picture of their children and their new racquets with the hashtag #RacquetRoadshow

School Watch
The School Watch program encourages everyone to look out for and report any after-hours crime in our schools.
Empty schools can become targets for unlawful entry, arson, stealing, graffiti and property damage, especially during school holiday periods. This comes at a cost to the whole community and not just the financial cost of repairs.
The School Watch program is a partnership between the Department of Education and Protective Services Group, Queensland Police Service, providing a way for members of the community to report anything they see that is suspicious, even if it seems minor.
On average, more than 700 calls are made to School Watch every year, helping to keep our schools safe.
Look, Listen, Report. Call School Watch on 13 17 88.
If you see a crime in progress, call Triple Zero (000).
